Is lane snapper open in the Gulf?

Live status for · rules verified 2026-08-14

Know the fish

A small, pretty snapper: pinkish-silver with yellow horizontal stripes and a diffuse dark blotch below the rear dorsal. Galveston fish typically run 0.5–2 lb (8–12 in), occasionally larger.

When they bite

Available spring through fall; frequently caught incidentally on red snapper trips. Best on moving tide; they bite much of the day. When red snapper season is closed, lanes and vermilion keep the box open.

Where & how

Where: Nearshore and mid-shelf reefs, shell pads, rigs, and rubble bottom from ~5–30 nm in 40–120 ft. Often mixed in with red and vermilion snapper on the same structure.

How: Bottom fishing with smaller baits and lighter tackle on the same reefs as red snapper. Small hooks and cut bait produce fast action; a two-hook bottom rig lets you load up.
