Snook are a prized, ambush-feeding inshore gamefish at the northern edge of their range in Texas — most common from the Land Cut south to the Rio Grande, with numbers building around South Padre and Port Isabel.
When they bite
Late spring through fall, with summer the peak. Warm, green tides moving along jetty rocks, passes and channel edges are prime; a hard freeze is the population's biggest enemy.
Where & how
Where: South Padre and Port Isabel jetties, the Brownsville Ship Channel, and Lower Laguna Madre edges — the far south holds nearly all of Texas's catchable snook.
How: Live shrimp or finger mullet free-lined along jetty rocks and channel drops; artificials that swim slow and low — soft plastics, suspending twitchbaits — worked with the current on moving water.
