Matagorda Jetty (Colorado River Mouth)

When it fishes: Incoming tide with green water pushed against the rocks; light SE wind. Fall bull-red run and spring/summer trout on the channel side.
Access: Walkable rock jetty on the west side of the Colorado River mouth inside LCRA's Matagorda Bay Nature Park, 6420 FM 2031. Park open sunrise-sunset; $5 adults, $2 seniors/military/disabled, 12 and under free. Paved day-use parking; short walk to the jetty.
- Free-line live shrimp along the channel edge on moving tide.
- The lighted park piers on the river fish well at night when the jetty is weathered out.

⚠ Rocks are uneven and slick near the waterline - grippy footwear, watch for barge wakes and rogue swells, and stay off the end in heavy surf.
Matagorda Bay Nature Park Piers & Ramp

Access: 6420 FM 2031, Matagorda - LCRA park at the end of FM 2031 with lighted fishing piers on the lower Colorado River and a ramp reaching the river mouth, surf and West Matagorda Bay. Sunrise-sunset; $5 adults, $2 seniors/military/disabled, 12 and under free. Restrooms with showers; RV campground.

Matagorda Beach (FM 2031 Drive-On)

When it fishes: Calm green surf with light SE wind; first two guts on incoming tide at dawn. The fall mullet run brings bull reds and tarpon in range.
Access: 20+ miles of drivable Gulf beach west of the Colorado River mouth; enter via the beach access road off FM 2031. $10 annual beach vehicle permit (sold at the beach entrance and local merchants) required to drive on; paved no-permit parking at Jetty Park. Sand is often soft - 4x4 frequently required past the first stretch.
- Air down and carry a tow strap - soft sand traps 2WD vehicles regularly.
- Shrimp or Fishbites in the first gut for whiting and pompano; mullet in the third gut for reds.
- Glass containers are prohibited on the beach.
⚠ No lifeguards; rips along the guts and near the river mouth. Check the tide before driving far down-island so you are not cut off coming back.
Sargent Beach (FM 457)

When it fishes: Incoming tide with light offshore wind; renowned fall bull-red and black-drum surf fishing. Mitchell's Cut is a classic tide-runner spot but sits inside the groin work zone until ~March 2027.
Access: County beach lot and drive-on access at the end of FM 457 south of the Sargent swing bridge; free parking, restrooms, picnic tables. HEADS UP: an $86M USACE/GLO stabilization project runs May 2026-Aug 2027 (nearshore breakwaters, a terminal groin at Mitchell's Cut, then nourishment) - expect equipment and work-zone restrictions. The separate west-side access and Sargent public ramp (CR 238) have been gated by USACE since Nov 2024, closed until further notice.
- Confirm which stretches are open before a long drive - construction zones shift through 2027.
- Soft sand and eroded scarps: 4x4 strongly recommended.
- Long rods with pyramid weights hold bait in the strong longshore current.
⚠ One of the highest-erosion shorelines on the Gulf: steep drop-offs, debris, exposed revetment, and active heavy equipment during construction. Obey posted closures; no lifeguards; strong currents at Mitchell's Cut.
Half Moon Reef (Matagorda Bay)

When it fishes: Moving tide with light-to-moderate southeast wind; spring and fall for big trout over the shell, summer for numbers. Wind under ~15 kt keeps the open-bay crossing fishable.
Access: The Nature Conservancy's 54-acre restored oyster reef off Palacios Point, between Tres Palacios Bay and the eastern arm of Matagorda Bay — about a 16 nm run west across the bay from Matagorda Harbor or a short run south out of Palacios. Completed spring 2014; closed to oyster harvest by TPWD but open to rod-and-reel fishing, and surveyed anglers average measurably more fish per trip here than elsewhere in the bay.
- Drift the reef rows with soft plastics or live shrimp under a popping cork — the TPWD closure corners frame the productive footprint.
- The reef crown rises near the surface in spots; work the edges where shell drops to mud for the better trout.
- Anchor only on the perimeter — dragging tackle or anchors across the restored crest tears up live oyster.
⚠ Open mid-bay water: a hard southerly builds steep 2-3 ft chop quickly over the reef shallows, and afternoon storms cut off the long run back to Matagorda Harbor. Watch for exposed structure near the surface at low tide.
Matagorda Nearshore Reef Site

When it fishes: Light southeast wind under ~10-12 kt and 2 ft or less Gulf seas, typically May-September; green water pushed nearshore improves the bite.
Access: TPWD-permitted nearshore reefing site roughly 11 nm southeast of the Mouth of the Colorado River jetties at Matagorda, in about 60 ft of water. Short Gulf run for Matagorda charters on calm summer mornings; inside the 9-nm Texas state-water line, so red snapper can be targeted year-round when weather allows.
- Watch the site's status before banking on structure: TPWD listed the Matagorda site as permitted with pyramid deployments dependent on funding, so sonar-search the permit area rather than one waypoint.
- Free-lined live bait or vertical jigs over the hardest returns produce snapper; run flatlines for kings while drifting the area.
- Bar crossing at the Colorado River mouth is the trip-maker — go early before the seabreeze builds.
⚠ The Mouth of the Colorado River jetty crossing can break on an outgoing tide against southeast swell; small-craft advisories make the run a no-go. File a float plan and carry VHF — cell coverage fades offshore.
Matagorda Harbor (Port of Bay City)

When it fishes: Bulkheads and the harbor entrance fish best on moving tide - winter black drum and sheepshead around structure; launch here for the river, ICW and West Matagorda Bay.
Access: 60-acre public harbor on the ICW just east of the FM 2031 bridge, Matagorda; 979-245-5831. Four paved public ramps, free with free parking. Harbor Bait & Tackle on site (bait, ice, tackle, fuel); transient slips $1.25/ft/night; fish-cleaning station and restaurant.
