Packery Channel Jetties

When it fishes: Moving tide funneling bait through the channel - outgoing is prime; early morning and sundown; light to moderate wind.
Access: Concrete jetties with handrails at the mouth of Packery Channel, North Padre Island. South jetty via South Packery Channel Beach (Whitecap Blvd off Park Rd 22, or Access Rd 3A); park on the beach near the base - $12 annual Corpus Christi beach parking permit (sold at Stripes, Circle K, H-E-B, Visitor Center). Free ramp and cleaning station on the north side. Portable restrooms and showers at the beach.
- The handrailed concrete walkway is the most walker-friendly jetty in the region.
- Free-line live shrimp with the current along the channel side for trout, reds and snapper.
- Fall brings bull red and flounder runs through the channel; winter sheepshead stack the rocks.
⚠ Stay on the concrete walkway rather than the granite; channel currents are strong on big tides and surfers share the pass - never wade the channel mouth.
Port Aransas South Jetty

Access: Granite south jetty of the Aransas Pass ship channel, walkable from the beach at the north end of I.B. Magee Beach Park, Port Aransas. Free, open around the clock; beach parking permit required to park on the sand. Texas license required.
- Free-line live shrimp or croaker along the channel edge; drop shrimp tight to the rocks for sheepshead.
- The fall mullet migration brings bull reds, tarpon and kings within range of the end sections.
- Watch ship wakes - large vessels push surge over low rocks with little warning.
⚠ Granite is uneven and very slick - cleats or sturdy footwear, never turn your back on ship wakes, avoid the outer jetty in rough seas or lightning.
Bob Hall Pier (Padre Balli Park)

Access: 15820 Park Rd 22, Corpus Christi (North Padre Island). REOPENED Feb 24, 2026 after a full $28.5M reconstruction - the original was demolished after Hurricane Hanna (2020). 1,240 ft, rebuilt to 100-year-storm standards with wider ADA walkways, night lighting and built-in rod holders. Free for the first 90 days; from July 2026, $3 admission plus $4/rod. Restaurant build-out still in progress; hours not yet fixed - verify locally.
- Night fishing with live shrimp under the lights is the classic play for trout and drum.
- Use the county-installed rod holders - clamping personal holders to the new structure is prohibited.
- The end of the pier reaches deeper water for kings, tarpon and big sharks in late summer.
⚠ New rails and ADA surfaces, but still a Gulf pier - pier gaff/net for big fish, mind hooks in crowds, expect closures in tropical weather.
Cole Park Pier (Corpus Bayfront)

Access: 1900 block of Ocean Dr, Corpus Christi - city-rebuilt bayfront pier, reopened December 2021 and open through the 2025 plaza improvements. Free; free parking along Ocean Dr; shaded seating, lighting, cleaning stations and rod holders on the pier.
- Dead shrimp on a bottom rig is the local standard for black drum.
- Built-in rod holders and cleaning stations - the best-equipped free pier on the bayfront.
- When the pier is crowded, work jigs along the nearby seawall riprap for trout.

Horace Caldwell Pier (Port Aransas)

Attendants staff business hours (roughly 7am-11pm off-season; varies); paid admission valid through 5am. Bait, tackle and concessions on the pier.
- The deeper sections past the second bar hold trout and larger drum; the first gut produces whiting and pompano.
- Shrimp under a popping cork close in; cut mullet on bottom rigs farther out for reds and sharks.
- Rental poles and bait sold on-site if you travel light.
⚠ Keep children off the rails, use a pier net for larger fish; storms and high surf close the pier temporarily.
Roberts Point Park (Port Aransas)

Access: 301 J.C. Barr Blvd, Port Aransas - 50-acre city waterfront park next to the ferry landing on the ship channel. Free: fish from the piers, granite shoreline and the 1-mile bulkhead walkway; restrooms, picnic areas, playground, observation tower. Free parking; also on the free Port A B-Bus route.
- Shrimp or soft plastics along the bulkhead rocks and pilings for sheepshead and drum.
- Flounder stage along the channel edge in fall - drag a jig-and-Gulp slowly.
- A great family option: playground, restrooms and level walkways behind the fishing.
⚠ Strong currents and heavy boat/ferry traffic - keep lines clear of vessels, mind wakes along the bulkhead, supervise children at the edge.
Corpus Christi Nearshore Reef (Kinta S)

When it fishes: Any light-wind day; the most weather-forgiving offshore trip in the region. Clearer green water improves the snapper and king bite around the pyramids and wreck.
Access: TPWD Artificial Reef Program site about 8 nm off the Mustang Island beachfront — roughly a 13-15 km run southeast of the Port Aransas jetties or out of Packery Channel — in ~70-75 ft of water. The 169-acre site holds 470 concrete pyramids, hundreds of culverts, and the 155-ft freighter Kinta S (sunk 2014). Inside Texas state waters, so red snapper are open here year-round under state rules — the go-to short-trip snapper spot outside the federal season.
- The Kinta S and pyramid fields are scattered across the 169-acre block — idle around and mark structure before dropping.
- State-water snapper bag/size rules differ from federal — know which rules apply before keeping fish.
- The nearby Lonestar Reef (MU-770L) is a second TPWD site for another stop.
⚠ Short run but still open Gulf — watch the bar and jetty current at Packery Channel on strong outgoing tides and give commercial traffic room in the Aransas ship channel. Dive flags are common over the wreck in summer.
Baker Bank

When it fishes: Light-wind summer windows with 2-3 ft seas or less; green-to-blue water pushed in over the bank turns the bite on. Anchor or drift the up-current edge of the high spot.
Access: Roughly 45 nm east-northeast of the Port Aransas jetties in federal waters; a full-day blue-water run for Port A charter and party boats. One of the famous South Texas relict coralgal banks, rising from ~74 m of water to a crest near 58 m (190 ft). Charters target it hardest during the federal red snapper for-hire season and run it for kingfish, ling and amberjack from late spring through fall.
- Fish the crest and drop-off edges — the bank rises ~16 m above the mud shelf and holds bait and snapper on its flanks.
- South Baker Bank sits a few miles southwest and is a proven second stop when Baker is crowded.
- Bring heavy bottom tackle plus a flat-line bait for kings and cobia riding above the structure.
⚠ Long open-Gulf run far beyond VHF-to-shore range for small craft — file a float plan, carry EPIRB/PLB, and watch afternoon summer squalls. No protection or quick bailout between the jetties and the bank.
Dream Bank

When it fishes: Multi-day or 12-hour-plus trip weather: settled summer or early-fall pattern with light southeast breeze. Blue water over the bank brings wahoo and dorado over the top.
Access: About 50 nm south-southeast of Port Aransas (also reachable from Port Mansfield), a drowned coralgal reef with distinct terraces rising from ~84 m to a 70 m crest. A long-range target for Port A charter and party boats on extended snapper/jack trips, usually paired with the Adam Rocks farther south.
- Deepest of the popular Port A banks — bring electric or high-capacity reels for 230-275 ft drops.
- The terraced structure means fish stack at specific depth breaks; sound around before dropping.
- Worth trolling the perimeter for wahoo before settling in to bottom fish.
⚠ Longest run in this list — commit only with a solid two-day forecast, full safety complement, and ample fuel. Cell coverage is nonexistent; carry satellite comms.
Hospital Rock

When it fishes: 2 ft or less seas with moderate current; the broad crest fishes best on a slow drift, relocating between the bank's multiple high spots as marks move.
Access: Approximately 35 nm east of Port Aransas on the same mid-shelf relict reef line as Southern Bank; the largest of the nearby banks at ~5.2 km², rising from 78 m to a 56 m crest. A classic Port Aransas party-boat and charter snapper ground, fished hardest in the summer federal snapper season and for kings and amberjack spring through fall.
- With 22 m of relief and a big footprint, work the edges — bigger snapper often stage off the down-current slope rather than dead on top.
- North Hospital Bank is a short hop north when the main rock gets picked over.
- Deep-drop speed jigs shine here when live bait is scarce.
⚠ Same long-range exposure as the other banks — full offshore safety gear, fuel reserve, and a hard weather window. Summer thunderstorms build fast over the mid-shelf.
Southern Bank

When it fishes: Calm summer mornings before the seabreeze builds; slow drifts across the high spot with the current, watching the sounder for suspended bait balls.
Access: About 35 nm east-southeast of Port Aransas, the closest of the big natural snapper banks and a staple of Port A six-pack and party-boat trips. Crest ~60 m over an ~80 m bottom. Since 2023 it is a NOAA Coral Habitat Area of Particular Concern (anchoring restricted) — fish it on the drift. Peak charter traffic is during the federal for-hire red snapper season.
- The HAPC corner coordinates are published in 50 CFR 622.74 — stay legal: no anchoring or bottom-disturbing gear inside the box.
- Hospital Rock and North Hospital sit a few miles north along the same relict reef trend, making an easy multi-stop day.
- Drop double-rig cut bait for snapper; jig the mid-column for amberjack over the highest relief.
⚠ Federal-waters run with no shelter; check the Gulf forecast and turn back early if seas build. Currents over the bank can be strong — keep drifts controlled around other boats.
Corpus Christi Marina (Peoples St T-Head)

When it fishes: Calm evenings and nights around lighted docks and the breakwater; winter and early spring for sheepshead on the pilings and riprap.
Access: Downtown bayfront city marina with two drive-out T-heads (Peoples St, Lawrence St) and the Cooper's Alley L-head; 560+ wet slips, transient slips, restaurants and restrooms. T-heads publicly accessible by car from Shoreline Blvd. Marina office 361-826-3980. License required; check the office for current rates and posted fishing-area rules.
- Scrape a few barnacles and drop small shrimp-tipped jigs tight to pilings for sheepshead.
- The protected breakwater keeps this fishable when wind blows out the jetties and surf.
