Offshore TABLE: Excellent DIFFICULTY

A small, pretty snapper: pinkish-silver with yellow horizontal stripes and a diffuse dark blotch below the rear dorsal. Galveston fish typically run 0.5-2 lb (8-12 in), occasionally larger.

On the water

Gray SnapperGray SnapperDIFFERENT LIMIT

Yellow horizontal stripes and a dark lateral spot mark a lane; a gray snapper has neither.

Vermilion SnapperDIFFERENT LIMIT

Vermilion (beeliner) are slender, uniformly red with a forked tail and no lateral spot; lanes are deeper-bodied with the spot.

Keep or release

Handling & releaseSubject to barotrauma from deeper water (bulging eyes, stomach out the mouth). Use a descending device or venting tool per the DESCEND Act; do not puncture the stomach.
