WhenYear-round, but late winter-early spring (Feb-Apr) is prime as sheepshead gather near passes and jetties to spawn - peak numbers around the rocks and pilings. Fish moving tide; daytime is fine. When trout/reds slow, sheepshead shine.WhereAnything hard and barnacle-encrusted: the jetties, Texas City Dike rocks, bridge and pier pilings, bulkheads, oyster reefs, ship-channel structure, and Seawolf Park. They hug vertical structure where barnacles grow.HowDrop bait straight down tight to the pilings/rock with a light bottom or knocker rig; feel for the tick and set the hook FAST (just before you think you feel the bite). Use a small strong hook and fresh crustacean bait. A visual daytime feeder; night fishing for sheepshead is rarely practiced in Galveston.
Handling & releaseHardy around structure and release well. Watch the sharp dorsal/anal spines and crushing teeth when unhooking. Undersized fish return fine - get them off the barnacle rack quickly.On the tableWhite, firm, sweet meat with an almost shellfish-like sweetness (from their crustacean diet) - one of the best-tasting inshore fish. The catch is they're tedious to clean.As baitA table fish, not used as bait. Their preferred baits are fiddler crabs, shrimp and barnacles.
