The bait clock
☀ DawnFresh dead shrimp bits on #6 two-drop rig
Whiting feed in the first gut early before beach traffic and heat build.
☼ MiddayFishbites (shrimp/sand flea) or peeled shrimp
Whiting bite steadily all day in the surf; durable Fishbites survive the pickers.
☾ DuskFresh shrimp or squid strips
Evening incoming tide brings whiting tight to the first gut.
★ NightSmall fresh cut shrimp on bottom
They still bite after dark by scent, though most anglers target them by day.
[{'months': [11, 12, 1, 2], 'note': 'Cool months are prime for surf whiting off Galveston beaches.'}]
Time of day matters little for whiting; tide stage and surf clarity drive the bite.
Handling & releaseHardy little fish; unhook and release quickly if not keeping. Small hooks and pieces of bait reduce deep-hooking. No special handling or venting needed. On the tableOne of the best-eating panfish on the Texas coast - sweet, white, mild, tender meat, low in mercury. Small size means smaller fillets, but flavor is top-tier; superb fried. As baitSmall whiting are sometimes used as cut or live bait for bigger predators (bull reds, sharks, jacks) in the surf/jetties. Their own best bait is fresh dead shrimp.
