Brazos Santiago South Jetty (SPI)

When it fishes: Moving tide through the pass, especially the last of the incoming; calm to moderate seas - the rocks are unfishable in heavy swell.
Access: Granite jetty on the south side of Brazos Santiago Pass, reached through Isla Blanca Park ($15/vehicle daily as of Aug 2026). Park in the paved lots at the south end and walk out; the county lists the jetties as a designated fishing area, with a bait stand nearby.
- Free-line live shrimp or finger mullet along the rocks for snook and snapper.
- Silver spoons and topwaters at first light for mackerel and trout when bait is showering.
- Summer and early fall are best for snook and tarpon around the channel edge.
⚠ Uneven, slippery granite with no railings - cleated footwear, never turn your back on the swell, stay off in rough weather.

Pirate's Landing Pier (Port Isabel)

When it fishes: Night fishing under the lights on a moving tide; cooler months for sheepshead and black drum, summer nights for trout and snapper.
Access: 501 E Maxan St, Port Isabel, at the foot of the Queen Isabella Causeway - privately operated public pier billed as the longest fishing pier in Texas. Open 24 hours. 12-hour fishing pass $9.75+tax per pole ($9.25 seniors, $8 veterans); spectators $2.75; rod rental $19.50 incl. admission. Tackle shop, bait, snack bar, restaurant, restrooms, paved parking; licenses sold on site. (The OLD causeway pier nearby was demolished - removal completed 2026 for the artificial-reef project; this pier is the one that's open.)

Access: 7300 Park Rd 100 N, just north of the SPI Convention Centre. Reopened summer 2026 after a $6.9M renovation (ribbon cutting June 26, 2026): new pavilions, accessible dune boardwalk, renovated restrooms/showers, new parking. Open 8am-7pm peak (Mar-Sep), 8am-6pm off-season; county beach fee $15/vehicle as of Aug 2026. Gateway to beach driving on the undeveloped north end.
- Walk or drive north away from swimmers for uncrowded surf.
- Peeled shrimp or Fishbites on double-drop rigs in the first gut for whiting and pompano.
- 4WD recommended for driving north of the access; check the tide first.
⚠ Rip currents common; no lifeguard on the undeveloped stretches; soft sand can strand 2WD at high tide.
Isla Blanca Park (SPI)

Access: 33174 State Park Rd 100 - Cameron County park at the southern tip of South Padre Island. Office 8am-7pm peak / 8am-6pm off-season. Daily vehicle beach-access fee $15 as of August 2026 (veterans 50% off). Over a mile of Gulf beach, bait stand, full-service marina and public ramp (no fishing at the launch).
- Fish the first two guts with fresh dead shrimp or cut mullet on fish-finder rigs.
- The bait stand inside the park sells live shrimp; the park fills fast on summer weekends.
- One daily county permit also covers Andy Bowie and the other county coastal parks.

Port Isabel Nearshore Reef

When it fishes: Year-round state-water snapper option; calm summer mornings for family half-day charters, fall for kings and ling over the high-relief rig legs.
Access: TPWD nearshore reefing site ~7 nm southeast of the Brazos Santiago jetties in 75 ft of water — at 380+ acres the largest of TPWD's nearshore sites, with up to 45 ft of profile from reef pyramids and balls, oil-rig legs, a tugboat, a Navy barge and a shrimp boat. Coordinates are TPWD's published site center; the classic short-run snapper trip out of Port Isabel/SPI.
- The mixed materials fish differently — reef balls for grazers and sheepshead, rig legs and vessels for snapper and pelagics.
- Being in state waters, it stays open when the federal snapper season closes — a big deal for winter charters.

Access: 1,650-acre reef ~13 nm northeast of the Brazos Santiago Pass jetties — the largest and most complex artificial reef off Texas. Over 100 million lbs of graded material (concrete, steel, sunken vessels, rail ties, cinder blocks) built as a nursery-to-adult red snapper habitat. Coordinates are TPWD's published site center; a staple half- to three-quarter-day SPI charter run.
- Roughly 80% of snapper caught here were raised on the reef — expect numbers with a shot at bigger fish on the high-relief piles.
- Move between patch types: cinder-block nursery rows hold bait and juveniles; sunken vessels and big concrete hold the keepers.
- Expansion sites are planned for 2026-2028 — expect new structure.

Texas Clipper Reef

Access: The 473-ft former USTS Texas Clipper, sunk November 17, 2007 as a TPWD Ships-to-Reefs project ~17 nm northeast of South Padre Island. Rests on its side in 132 ft of water with structure rising to within ~50 ft of the surface; position published by TPWD and matches the public wreck listing.
- The high-relief superstructure holds fish at multiple depths — stagger baits from 60 ft to the bottom.
- Masts and kingposts were secured to the deck for added complexity; expect snags and rig accordingly.
- Shares the day well with RGV Reef — many SPI charters hit both on a full day.
⚠ 17-nm open-Gulf run; strong currents over the wreck and dive-boat traffic — stand off when dive flags are up.
Jim's Pier (SPI Bayside)
