The Jetties & Passes
Every granite jetty and cut on the coast, with the Corps of Engineers construction record where it exists, what the rocks hold and when, and how to get on them.
Sabine / Port Arthur
The Sabine Jetties
Two granite structures confining the flow out of Sabine Pass. Local tourism material describes them as roughly three miles each; the Corps-derived figures are longer, and the difference is the submerged and settled portion — trust the Corps numbers for the structure and assume the walkable part is shorter. The rocks hold speckled trout, redfish, Spanish mackerel, jack crevalle, black drum, sheepshead, gafftop, sharks, rays, flounder, gulf trout and croaker, with occasional kingfish and ling. Three methods are used locally and they are not interchangeable: walking the rocks, anchoring nearby, and drifting the granite. The quarry source, the exact boat-cut locations and the safe walkable distance have no published figures for Sabine specifically — scout before you commit to a walk.
Galveston Complex
Galveston South Jetty
The longer of the pair, converging with the north jetty toward a 7,000-ft gap at the entrance. Built to +5 ft mean low tide with a typical 12-ft crown, widening to as much as 20 ft at the seaward end, and terminating near the -27 ft contour. The core is mostly sandstone riprap from 20 lb up to 3 tons; granite blocks of three-quarters of a ton and heavier form the cover layer over the seaward 15,000 ft. Total stone came to 807,000 tons at $2,567,000. After the 1900 storm the jetty was extended in 1907–09 from station 348+00 to 356+00 using 5–7 ton granite blocks landward and 8–10 ton riprap seaward, and a concrete cap went on in 1908; asphaltic concrete followed in 1933–35 and a further concrete cap in 1940–42. Deep water sits close to the rock, which is why offshore species show up within casting range.
Galveston North Jetty
Granite cover layer over the entire structure, 1,117,000 tons of stone at $3,484,000. The 1915 hurricane opened numerous gaps and exposed the core; 44,000 tons of stone went back in during 1925–27, and both jetties got new head sections on the outer 200 ft between 1962 and 1966. Walk-on access from the Bolivar side is free and open 24 hours — a walkable cement structure with deep water on one side and shallow marsh on the other. A Texas fishing license is required. Cuts and gaps in the north jetty strand walking anglers when the tide rises and the Corps has no plans to close them; the exact locations have not been published, so scout the whole walk on a falling tide before you rely on it.
Freeport & Surfside
Surfside (East) Jetty - the Vykruta Jetty Trail
Large granite slabs with a concrete walkway laid on top for foot access, and a small lighthouse at the outer end. It protects the Freeport Harbor Channel and is reached through the 15-acre county park. Anglers take red drum, speckled trout and Spanish mackerel here, often working at night under gas-generator-powered flood lights. The practical rule is simple: the east jetty fishes well when the surf is blown out, because it reaches deeper moving water. Open day and night. Cleated boots, always — the granite is lethal wet. Surfing north of the jetty draws people from a long way off, so expect company on a clean swell.
Quintana (West) Jetty
The southern arm of the original converging pair, built 540 ft apart from its twin as fascine mats reaching 3,600 and 4,350 ft, then extended in granite between 1889 and 1899 for about $1.5 million. Federal repairs with riprap and large stone blocks began in 1900 after the September hurricane tore into it; 41,080 tons of stone went in across three contracts from 1903 to 1908, with further resets in 1918–1920 and 1924. There is no published figure for the safe walkable distance on the west jetty, and no published survey of boat cuts in either Freeport jetty — scout it yourself.
Matagorda & Sargent
Colorado River (Matagorda) jetties
The federal project "Mouth of the Colorado River, TX" includes a 2,600-foot East Jetty built to address shoaling. Project channel dimensions are an entrance channel 15 feet deep by 200 feet wide, a navigation channel 12 by 100 feet running 6.5 miles, and a diversion channel 20 by 250 feet running 3.1 miles, authorized under Senate Document 102, 90th Congress, 2nd Session. The 1992 redesign of the West Matagorda Bay jetty consumed 50,000 tons of granite in 10-to-16-ton blocks plus 30,000 tons of 1-to-3-ton rip-rap — about 80,000 tons — to narrow the channel's flow and clear silt after the river was returned to its original Gulf entrance. Jetty fish here are redfish, speckled trout, black drum and seasonal Spanish mackerel, with sheepshead and flounder on the rocks; early morning and dusk are the productive windows. Wear grippy shoes: the granite is slick, and the current between the walls is a river current on top of a tide.
Mitchell's Cut
Mitchell's Cut is described as the only pass between Freeport and Matagorda Bay, and it is the working route for offshore fishing and shrimping out of Sargent. Beyond that, the record is thin: there is no citable source for its construction date, dredged dimensions or maintenance history. It is a small, current-driven cut, and it should be run on local knowledge and a current chart rather than on anything published here.
Sargent Beach revetment
Not a jetty in the fishing sense, but the dominant hard structure on this beach. The Corps installed a granite breakwater revetment in the early 1990s to slow erosion threatening the Intracoastal Waterway. Sargent Beach experiences some of the highest rates of erosion on the Texas coast, and CIRP studies in 2012 and 2013 recommended a ten-breakwater demonstration project. Rock in the surf holds bait and holds fish; it also holds line.
Port O'Connor
Port O'Connor jetties / Matagorda Ship Channel
The Matagorda Ship Channel was cut through the peninsula between 1962 and 1966 to let ocean-going vessels move between the Gulf and Matagorda Bay, and it forms part of the Port of Port Lavaca-Point Comfort under the Calhoun Port Authority. Channel length is given as 2.00 miles; maximum vessel size is 810 feet length overall, 138-foot beam, 50-foot draft. There is no published figure for the jetty length in feet — TPWD's statewide jetty feature names Port O'Connor among the Texas jetty systems but publishes lengths only for Galveston, where 35,587 feet makes the Guinness-listed longest jetties on earth. Texas jetties generally produce speckled trout, redfish and drum, with snook, king mackerel, tarpon, cobia and juvenile snappers as bonus catches. Wear felt-soled wading boots for rock-walking because of the algae; start your engine before you free an anchor, and use an anchor you are willing to lose on rock.
Pass Cavallo
One of five natural inlets between the Gulf and Matagorda Bay. La Salle established the first French settlement in Texas here in 1684 and La Belle passed through in 1686. It was a Civil War port of entry, later captured by Union forces during the blockade of Texas, and the Matagorda Island Lighthouse was originally built here. Modern shoaling and depth figures, and the effect of the ship channel on the pass, have no citable published source — the pass is unjettied, it moves, and it is widely treated as a boat-handling hazard. Read it on the day.
Port O'Connor Paddling Trail
A 40-mile paddling trail crossing Espiritu Santo and Matagorda Bays. Espiritu Santo Bay itself is a 16-mile-long, 5-mile-wide northeastern extension of San Antonio Bay, separated from Matagorda Bay by the barrier islands running south from Port O'Connor to Matagorda Island; the bottom is oyster reef, mud, sand and shell and it is part of the Guadalupe River estuary system. Its deeper water holds redfish, trout and flounder. Paddlers routinely encounter stingrays along with dolphins, wading birds and sea turtles.
Rockport & Aransas Pass
Cedar Bayou
Sealed since the 1970s by siltation and badly placed spoil, with dredging attempts going back to the 1930s. The restoration permit was signed by Aransas County Judge Burt Mills on 3 August 2011, and Cedar Bayou and Vinson Slough together reopened on 25 September 2014 at a cost of $9.4 million — CCA Texas put in $1.6 million alongside Aransas County, the Texas legislature, TPWD and the Texas General Land Office. Hurricane Harvey re-sealed the bayou with sediment within three years of the opening, with re-dredging estimated at about $3.5 million; dredging was underway again in June 2021 under J. M. Davidson, Inc., expected to finish 1 November 2021. Its current condition is not published here and should be checked locally before a trip: this pass shoals continuously and has closed entirely before.
Aransas Pass (the channel)
USACE first studied the harbor in 1853. Construction began in earnest in 1879 after Rockport residents raised the funds and Congress authorized deepwater improvements the same year. The efforts of 1880 to 1885 failed outright. By 1907 jetties were in place and a deepwater channel reached Harbor Island — the pass that made everything south of here possible. The rock itself sits in the Port Aransas region; from the Rockport side this is the outflow that drives every tide in Aransas and Redfish Bays.
Lighthouse Lakes / Redfish Bay
Four loops: Cutters at 5 miles, South Bay at 6.7, Redfish at 6.8 and Electric Lake at 1.25; South Bay also launches from Crabman Marina. All five Texas seagrass species occur here across roughly 14,000 acres of nursery and forage habitat, and the targets are spotted seatrout, red drum and flounder. The trail is named for the 1857 Lydia Ann lighthouse on North Harbor Island. Redfish Bay State Scientific Area was designated in June 2000, covering 32,000 acres including 14,000 acres of submerged seagrass — about 50 square miles — with 34 designated cut points for boat access. Voluntary prop-up zones from 2000 to 2005 failed; a mandatory no-uprooting rule took effect 1 May 2006, and the legislature extended seagrass protection statewide in September 2013.
Port Aransas & Corpus Christi
Port Aransas jetties (Aransas Pass, north and south)
This is the oldest and most historically layered jetty system in Texas. From 1880 to 1885 Major Mansfield of the Army Engineers built the first major work, the Mansfield Jetty on the south side: 5,500 ft of brush mattress covered with stone, running from Mustang Island out to the wreck of the steamer Mary and then turning north. It slowed the pass's migration to about 70 ft a year. The federal project was abandoned in 1889 and the private Aransas Pass Harbor Company took over in 1890. In 1895 and 1896 the company built jetties under Philadelphia professor Lewis Haupt and his Galveston associate H.C. Ripley, including the Haupt Jetty on the San Jose side, an unusual reaction breakwater designed to work while detached from shore, and the Nelson Jetty on the Mustang Island side. The company folded in 1897 and federal work resumed in 1899. The Army Engineers opened the pass in 1910; the local newspaper's account dates project completion to 1919. The two dates most likely mark pass opened against jetties finished, and we flag the discrepancy rather than pick one. Method: rock came in on railroad flatcars to Redfish Bay, transferred to barges, some rail-fitted, and went to receiving docks on San Jose and Mustang, where trestle track systems ran out into the Gulf and the loads were dumped. An earlier attempt using stacked wooden cases filled with sand and rock failed miserably before the switch to all rock. A local guide gives the south jetty as 7,385 ft and the north as 9,241 ft, all granite, but that comes from a realty blog rather than the Corps, so treat the lengths as unconfirmed. The quarry source is not documented at all: the historical society article does not name it, and we will not guess. The south jetty is walkable from the beach or reachable by vehicle near the marina, with free parking and walks running from a few hundred yards to over a mile depending how far out you go. The north jetty on San Jose has no road access at all: ferry or private boat, with a shuttle from Fisherman's Wharf quoted around $18 to $20 round trip. January through April is the north jetty's best window for bull reds and sheepshead. The south jetty produces redfish including trophy bulls over 44 inches, black drum, sheepshead, trout, Spanish mackerel in summer and flounder in autumn.
Packery Channel jetties
Packery is a re-opened historic pass. The modern channel and its twin jetties were cut as a federal and city project in the mid-2000s. We have no citable figure for the opening date, the jetty lengths or the project cost; the engineering literature on the inlet, Morphologic Response to a New Inlet, Packery Channel, Corpus Christi, Texas, is abstract-only to us and carries the construction timeline we would need. Treat the widely repeated 2006 date and roughly $30 million cost as unconfirmed. Local reporting confirms the channel has a history of failures: chronic shoaling and repeated maintenance dredging. Read the hazards section before you fish the rocks here. It is also a working navigation hazard in its own right; a barge has drifted onto the Packery jetties and needed Coast Guard assistance.
Fish Pass jetties
An artificial pass cut through Mustang Island and jettied, which subsequently shoaled shut and left two granite arms stranded in the surf. They are now a surf break and a walk-in surf-fishing spot inside Mustang Island State Park. Access may need four-wheel drive depending on beach conditions. The commonly quoted 1972 dig date and mid-1980s closure date are not confirmed by any source we can cite, so we leave them out. What is left is a pair of rock arms in the wash: fish them as structure in the surf, not as a pass.
Baffin Bay & the Upper Laguna Madre
No jetties in this region
Baffin Bay and the Upper Laguna Madre have no pass to the Gulf of Mexico and therefore no jetties. The nearest jettied inlets are Packery Channel to the north and Mansfield Pass, the East Cut, to the south. What Baffin has instead of rock jetties is natural rock, described in the reefs section below. That is the defining structural fact of the region: it fishes like a jetty system with the jetties scattered randomly across the bottom and none of them marked.
Port Mansfield
Mansfield Pass jetties (the East Cut)
Construction began in September 1957 and the channel was restored, meaning the works completed, in July 1962. In 1962 the Army Corps built the jetty system: granite breakwaters extending 580 yards and 825 yards from Padre Island into the Gulf of Mexico, with 315 yards between them for vessel passage. In feet that is roughly 1,740 and 2,475, short by Texas standards, and worth stating in feet because every other jetty on this coast is quoted that way. The rock is granite; the quarry is not documented and we do not guess at it. Access is the defining difficulty. There is no road to the Mansfield jetties from the mainland. The south jetty is boat-only. The north jetty can be reached on foot, but only after a roughly 60-mile drive down the beach through Padre Island National Seashore, where the Park Service strongly recommends four-wheel drive and warns that beach driving conditions change quickly with weather, tides and location. A predicted high tide of 1.5 ft or greater can cover the beach completely in places, which makes the trip inadvisable, and cell service is unreliable the whole way. Shoaling is the chronic problem. The system was designed for resiliently controlling coastal sediment transport, longshore drift and shoaling, and it has repeatedly shoaled to the point of restricting Gulf access. There is no published figure we can cite for the authorized or current controlling depth, which is exactly the number you want before you run the cut; ask locally. The full waterway measures 15.3 km, about 9.5 miles.
South Padre & Port Isabel
Brazos Santiago Pass jetties
The pass lies in the Lower Laguna Madre at the southernmost Gulf coast of Texas. It runs 1.14 miles with a water depth of 42 ft, and the jetties are a quarter of a mile apart. The South Padre Island jetty extends 0.6 miles from the shoreline; the Boca Chica jetty extends roughly 0.3 miles into Brazos Island's continental margin. In feet, that is about 3,170 and about 1,580. Construction dates are not established: Wikipedia attributes the works to a series of Rivers and Harbors Acts between 1878 and 1960 without dating the jetties, and the granite source is undocumented. The north jetty is reached on foot from Isla Blanca Park at 1 Bait Shop Rd: drive south on Padre Boulevard and follow the park roads to the southern end, where a bait stand sits at the head of the rocks. The south jetty is on Boca Chica Beach with no bridge, reachable by boat or by driving Boca Chica Beach when SpaceX has not closed it. Patient anglers here prize snook, sheepshead and the occasional tarpon, with kingfish and Spanish mackerel off the rocks. This is the most reliable snook jetty in Texas. Forty-two feet of water and commercial traffic bound for the Port of Brownsville moving through a quarter-mile gap means serious tidal flow; treat the current as the main hazard.
